Why Do Author Studies?
Students learn to compare and contrast
themes, analyze test and illustrations and make connections between their lives
and the life of the author. In some cases, students begin to see themselves
as authors like their favorite authors.
Authors can be a “distant mentor” for your
writers.
After reading one of the author’s books, many
students choose to read more books by this author, and even books that have
influenced the author. They expand
their reading experience.
Some authors write in a variety of
genres. Students are then exposed to
forms and genres they have not experienced.
A key component of an author study is researching
an author’s life and work in print and on-line. Teachers can teach information literacy skills
especially how to find information sources and determine if they
are credible.
Students can be inspired to emulate the
author’s writing style or their illustration techniques.
