MY JOURNEY TO TEACHING
have taught for more years that you can imagine!  If I were to give advice to new teachers it would be Take more risks, reflect more, and make a difference!

I was born in Earlville, Iowa., ten miles from the field of dreams in Dyersville, Iowa. I attended Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant Iowa where I played women's basketball. (Yes, in high school I made 60 points in one game.)   PS - We played 1/2 court 6 on 6.

After earning my B. A. degree in English and Psychology,Another aside, after student teaching I announced to my disappointed parents that I would rather be a check out person in a grocery store than teach.  O.K. it wasn't the best experience, but that a long story.)

I taught English/Language Arts in Manly, Iowa for 20 years. For 16 years I taught 7th grade, then for another 4 I taught both high school and junior high language arts and I advised the high school newspaper publication.   I enjoyed following and supporting many sporting events.  I was often the monitor for track events.  Measuring throwing events - the shot put, discus, javeline.  (PS when I had competed in track and field I went to state competition for throwing the softball (a women's event).  I started golfing while in Manly and still love it.

While teaching I returned to school, the University of Iowa earning a Master's degree in Instructional Design and Technology. I left Manly in 1990 and lived in Coralville, Iowa, a suburb of Iowa City, while getting my Ph.D. at the University of Iowa in English Education.

In 1994 I began teaching undergraduate and graduate courses at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. In 2006, I moved to Naples, Florida, where I currently teach language arts and reading courses to undergraduates and graduates at Florida Gulf Coast University.
